Epinette des Vosges
"Jacques et Juliette"

The epinette des Vosges is the French ancestor to the Appalachian Mountain dulcimer. This instrument is based on a small 1850 epinette I found on an antique auction web site. I made this one with 100% salvaged white oak, from an old broken drop-leaf table given to me by some friends. The tuning pegs are maple. As with older dulcimer ancestors, the frets are "stapled" on the soundboard. Newer versions have raised fingerboards.

The size is 22" x 3" x 1 3/4". It has 5 steel dulcimer strings, and the scale length is 15 1/2". It produces a very sweet tone. These are not tuned like Mountain dulcimers, but can be. A tuning guide is included.
