Scheitholt
"The Prioress"

One of the earliest known dulcimer ancestors is the German Scheitholt. It was described and illustrated in the Syntagma Musicum by Michael Praetorius in the 1600s. The size of my instrument is based on dimensions given in the Praetorius writings, but with a design similar to a shorter one housed in the Boston Museum of Art. The head carving is my own design. An early "board zither," the frets are "stapled" into the soundboard.

The instrument is all maple, except for the bridge and nut, which are ebony. It has a long 34 inch scale length. The size is 42" x 2.5" x 3".

This is a one-of-a-kind piece of art. Please E-mail for price and availability.
