The Cantigas de Santa Maria is a 13th Century Spanish illuminated manuscript that includes over 50 images of religious and secular figures playing many period instruments. One shows what is theorized are a teacher and pupil playing a pair of trapezoidal psalteries like my reproduction in the photo. Because this is a Spanish manuscript, many of the instruments have a Moorish/Arabic influence, like this psaltery. It has a shape reminiscent of early Arabian psalteries and seems to be a small version of the Qanun, which is a large 30-40 string zither that is still played today. |
