This instrument is really from the late Medieval period. It is an original piece based on a figure in a 15th century illuminated manuscript, and is, to my knowledge, the earliest recorded example of a "struck" psaltery in Europe. (The Persian Santur, similar to modern hammered dulcimers, dates back to pre-Biblical times.) The manuscript showed a rectangular psaltery with what looked like eight double-course strings, but without the split bridges we see on modern hammered dulcimers. I added the split bridges so 20 notes could be played instead of just eight. It is 24" x 8" x 2.5" and has a maple frame and back and a salvaged Douglas fir top with hand-carved black walnut rosettes. Please E-mail for price and availability. |
